Camp Ramah in Northern California Hires Daniele Hurwitz as Project Coordinator

We are very pleased to announce that Daniele Hurwitz has accepted the position of Project Coordinator for the newest Ramah camp-in-formation, Camp Ramah in Northern California (Ramah NorCal). The National Ramah Commission, working closely with the local San Francisco Bay Area NorCal Board of Directors and the leadership of Camp Ramah in California, has hired Daniele to help with all aspects of beginning the new camp, including searching for an appropriate rental site, beginning early marketing efforts, and coordinating among various stakeholders. She will be supervised directly by National Ramah.

Ramah Expands Tikvah Network; Appoints Howard Blas as First Director

The National Ramah Commission has announced that Howard Blas has been appointed as the first Director of the National Ramah Tikvah Network, in order to promote the growth of programming for campers with disabilities within the Ramah movement and beyond. Blas, who has served as the Director of the Tikvah Program at Camp Ramah in New England for 14 years, is an award-winning disabilities educator who is widely recognized as a leading national expert and spokesperson on behalf of inclusion and Jewish education for young people with disabilities.

Jim Joseph Foundation Awards Grant to Ramah and Young Judaea to Create Partnership for Young Alumni Learning

In a first-ever program partnership, the Ramah Camping Movement and Young Judaea have announced the Learning Hub project. This new initiative will actively engage young professionals in ongoing Jewish learning organized by camp alumni peers in four cities - Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. The initiative, which will be funded largely by the Jim Joseph Foundation with an investment of $250,000 over two years, will aim to connect camp alumni to serious Jewish learning and to greater engagement within their Jewish communities.

Ramah Camping Movement Raises $11.6m

Over the past twelve months, the Ramah Camping Movement has raised $11.6 million in new philanthropic investment from donors and foundations. The National Ramah Commission, the camping movement’s coordinating body, has received foundation grants and donor pledges of $3.8 million, while individual Ramah camps and Israel programs have raised $7.8 million for scholarships, endowments, capital development, and program innovation since early 2013.

Howard Blas Receives Prestigious Covenant Award

What a wonderful evening for Ramah, Tikvah, the disabilities inclusion field, and Howard Blas! This past Sunday night, October 27, Howard Blas received the prestigious Covenant Award at the Covenant Foundation’s annual awards dinner at the Chicago Hyatt Regency. This award is given each year to three outstanding Jewish educators. With hundreds of people in attendance, Howard was acknowledged for his leadership of the inspiring Tikvah program at Ramah New England, supported by camp director Rabbi Ed Gelb and the entire Ramah New England team. He was also recognized for his role as a consultant to the National Ramah Tikvah Network; his year-round teaching of children with disabilities for their bar or bat mitzvah; and his advocacy for inclusion in Jewish education. Howard was nominated for the award by Shira Arcus, the immediate past coordinator of the Ramah Tikvah Network and a long-time Ramah New England camper and staff member.
