A Better Understanding of Living with a Disability

In February, after a mean case of the flu, I ended up in the hospital for meningitis. A couple of days into my treatment, I developed a brain bleed (a rare side effect of meningitis) that led me to lose mobility on my left side. This was the first time I had personally experienced physical disability. Until now, my experience was limited to working with students or campers with physical disabilities. I could try to imagine what it was like, but I was not in their shoes. Now it was happening to me.

A Milestone Summer in Ukraine

It’s always exciting for the staff and campers at Camp Ramah Yachad Ukraine to come together every summer for 10 days of Jewish living and learning. This summer’s camp from July 27 to August 6 was extra special, as Yachad celebrated its 25th anniversary and The Schechter Institutes honored Yachad director Gila Katz, who has led the camp since its inception.

Reflections on the 2017 Summer Shlichim Training Seminar

One of the more remarkable things we do as a Ramah movement is bring nearly 300 young Israelis to our camps each summer. I always knew that shlichim were a great part of camp, but until I first attended the Summer Shlichim Training Seminar in Israel, sponsored by the Jewish Agency, I didn’t realize just how impactful the mishlachat program is.
