Sikkum Israel in Our Lives - Session 07 - The Founding of the State of Israel
Brief
Create an opportunity for chanichim to talk about the personal significance they attribute to Israel, the commitment and attachment they feel for the state, and how they benefit from its existence. Challenge chanichim who profess a feeling of attachment to do more to express or act on that attachment. Designed to sum up the core sessions in this unit on the establishment of the State of Israel, this session should encourage chanichim to revisit the subject of what Israel means to them.

Program
The madrich/a should begin the session by distributing excerpts from What Israel Means to Me (Appendix XV). Give chanichim a few minutes to read – either silently or aloud – and then share their thoughts on the essays.
The madrich/a should guide the conversation in a way that encourages each member of the group to draw on what we have learned during the previous sessions.
Guiding questions can include:
Complete the thought: What Israel means to me….
Does anything that we have learned make you want to learn more, or do something differently? If so, what?
As you learn more about Israel, do your feelings for the country change? If so, how?
Can you imagine a world without Israel? What would change or be different?
How should we at camp show our love for Israel?
This is the end of our unit of study on the founding of the State of Israel, but it is only the beginning of your camp experience. Throughout the coming years, camp will provide a setting and opportunities for you to get to know Israel better and better.
The Zionist pioneers worked hard to build the best society they could, and we at camp will work hard to create the best community that we can.
